When your heating system suddenly stops producing heat it can be stressful. Fortunately, many “no heat” problems can be traced to a few common components. At Parts4HeatingSystems, we help homeowners, and heating professionals get their systems up and running with convenient access to the right parts. In this article, we go over the items you should check first when your system goes cold.
Note: Working with heating equipment is complex and involves serious safety risks. To ensure your safety and the proper functioning of your equipment, it is always best to work with a professional when inspecting, maintaining and repairing your heating system.
1. Thermostat
It may sound basic, but always start with the thermostat. Is it set to “heat”? Is the temperature set higher than the room temperature? Dead batteries, faulty wiring and internal failures can all cause a thermostat to misfire. Replacing it may be an easy fix.
2. Ignition System or Pilot
If your furnace uses a standing pilot, make sure it’s lit. For electronic ignition systems, such as hot surface igniters or spark igniters, a failure here can prevent the burner from firing. These components wear out over time and are a common reason for heat loss.
3. Flame Sensor
A dirty or malfunctioning flame sensor can shut down your system as a safety measure to prevent gas buildup. If your unit starts and then shuts off quickly, this part is a prime suspect. Cleaning it gently with an emery cloth may help, but replacement might be necessary.
4. Gas Valve
If your system isn’t getting gas, the issue might be with the gas valve. This safety component regulates fuel flow. If it fails or is stuck closed, your system won’t ignite. Make sure your gas supply is active and consult a professional if you suspect the valve.
5. Blower Motor or Capacitor
If the burner fires but you don’t feel warm air blowing, the blower motor or its capacitor could be the issue. The capacitor helps the motor start and run efficiently. Either part can wear out with time.
6. Air Filters
Clogged filters restrict airflow, causing the system to overheat and shut down as a safety precaution. Always check your filter. Replacing it is one of the simplest and most overlooked solutions.
7. Limit Switch
This safety device shuts off the burner if the system gets too hot, often due to restricted airflow or a failing blower. If it malfunctions, it can cut off heating prematurely.
